MTN Dew Baja Blast Zero Sugar

Below is a written Fan Review from July 22, 2019 when Baja Blast Zero was first released for Taco Bell.

Ever since the Baja-Blast was introduced in the early 2000s, there has been a cult following behind it. Up until last year the only way to get Baja-Blast was by going to Taco Bell. This unfortunately meant having to leave with an upset stomach due to having too many Chalupa Supremes. Now, if you’re lucky your local grocery store may carry Baja-Blast in a 12-pack!

I was curious as to what the actual flavor was, so of course I looked it up online and I was not disappointed with the answer. The Mountain Dew fandom website describes it as a “tropical-lime-flavor…which is chemically formulated to taste good with [Taco Bell’s] food.” It sounds a little more suspect than Taco Bell trying to pair the perfect flavored soda with their soft-shelled tacos, but I digress.

I am a huge fan of Mountain Dew products. They’re actually the reason I started trying so many new sodas. Every few months, Mountain Dew would release a new flavor and I would always go try them. That trend slowly turned into me trying any new soda that came out. Unfortunately, the issue with most Mountain Dew products is that they’re more sugar than water. As a recovering fat kid, I cannot drink super sugary drinks all the time. I’m usually limited to only drinking Diet Mountain Dew but let’s just say it’s not their best product. So when I found out that they had Mountain Dew Baja-Blast Zero, I was ecstatic. Finally, I can have a diet Mountain Dew product that isn’t the original flavor. The downside to this is that it’s only sold at Taco Bell.

I was lucky enough to get it when Taco Bell was having a Cheesy Gordita Crunch box deal. (A Cheesy Gordita Crunch is probably the best thing on their menu and I highly recommend it if you go to Taco Bell.) Just like the original Baja-Blast, this one is also a sea foam green and smells like a lime pastry. I would like to clarify that it’s a 100% artificial lime pastry smell.

I took the first sip expecting to have all of my hopes and dreams crushed BUT I was completely baffled when not only did it not crush my hopes and dreams, but it actually exceeded my expectations. I couldn’t tell that it was diet! I thought maybe I was just being biased because I had been hoping for this for a long time. Therefore, I tried it a couple more times and convinced some friends to try it. Even my friends that don’t like diet sodas, liked it. The Taco Bell near me is about 20-minutes away and I have driven there multiple times just to get this soda. A downside to note is that if you take very small sips, you can taste that “diet” flavor.

I would recommend buying as much as you can because you will not be disappointed. Also, this may not be on their soda fountain forever so enjoy it while it’s here!

P.S. Baja-Blast Zero paired perfectly with the Cheesy Gordita Crunch. I’m not sure what chemicals they put in it to pair well with the taco and I don’t think I care.
