I’m not sure what butter cake is. I’m not sure how a soda can taste “gooey”. I do know soda though. That’s probably why the fine folks at Excel Bottling sent me this Gooey Butter Cake Soda to review.

Gooey Butter Cake Soda is made with pure cane sugar and a bunch of artificial flavors. While I like to see natural ingredients in my soda if it tastes good it could be made of mashed up crickets that were grown in test tubes. While I’m sure this tastes better than mashed up crickets I can’t guarantee it until I try it.

This smells like cake created in a test tube and I’m 100% ok with that. Why? Because it was. They didn’t blend a butter cake up and carbonate it. This was created and it’s ok if the smell reminds me it was created. It’s a good smell, because it’s unique and sweet. Two things I can find favor with in a soda.

OH, that’s what a butter cake is! It’s a pound cake. Let me quickly research.

Butter cakes are cakes that use butter as a primary ingredient. Pound cake, according to 2 seconds of internet research, is the simplest of butter cakes. That said I can confidently tell you that this is pound cake soda.

I’m not really sure if I’m getting the “gooey” aspect of it, but something tells me I’m better off that way. No, Gooey Butter Cake Soda has heavy notes of vanilla, a high carbonation, and slight chemical aftertaste, but no goo.

This tastes like the cousin of cream soda. It’s closely related, but you’re not going to get the two mixed up. The vanilla seems stronger here and the mouthfeel is… well buttery in a way. Carbonation wise it’s a strong fizz from start to finish. Immediately burning at the tip of my tongue and continuing to do so as it slithers downward.

Now onto the bad. This has an aftertaste. I didn’t really notice it at first, but the more I drink it the stronger it becomes. This aftertaste is just more confirmation that this was made in a test tube. Well, I honestly don’t know if it was literally made in a test tube, but you get the idea.

I was ok with this knowledge in the aroma. I’m not ok with it invading the taste, and invade it does. As I get closer to emptying the bottle the aftertaste takes more and more ground. What was once the fertile grounds of my taste buds enjoying the Butter Cake taste are being overrun by the chemical finish. Little by little at first until I can only taste the aftertaste with my last few swigs and then even taste it without drinking at all

That’s really unfortunate. Gooey Butter Cake was doing a lot right until the last fourth of the bottle. If I’d stopped then I would have enjoyed it more… heck if I’d eaten something alongside it I bet I would have enjoyed it more. So many variables, but I rate all sodas based on my 1:1 relationship with them so this shall be no different.
