MTN Dew Zero Sugar

I normally avoid diet or zero sugar sodas because they aren’t something I’d drink on my own.  The more I think about it though, the less sense it makes. They are only getting more popular and tasting more and more like “the real thing”.  The one energy drink I consume is a zero sugar beverage so instead of fighting the sucralose wave I might as well attempt to surf it. As I paddle my board out there I see today’s offering, Mtn Dew Zero Sugar.

Look at that, I have a watermark now. Isn’t that fancy? Twist is unimpressed.

As of this writing, Pepsi (the parent beverage for Mtn Dew) is adding a lot of matte black to the cans of their zero sugar offerings.  As a fan of matte black I’m happy to see it. The can in front of me is tall and has a variety of geometric patterns of green, silver, black, and white.  It’s very Battle Tanks meets Mtn Dew. Enough rambling, if there is such a thing, let’s get on with it.

Well if I had a “smell test” it would certainly pass it as the aroma is almost identical to the original.  This only bolsters my feelings as I begin to stand up on the longboard.

Unsurprisingly, this is an excellent entry into the zero sugar market.  I would say it’s about 90% Mtn Dew with the remaining 10% causing me to be aware that something is different.  You can’t expect it to taste exactly like Dew. Different ingredients means a different taste, but they should be proud of how similar it is.

It’s more refreshing than not and I think some of that has to do with the somewhat mild carbonation.  When I first upend the can there’s a slight burst along the top of my tongue. The bubbles fizzle out rather quickly, only to reappear and singe the back of my throat as their last act.

Mtn Dew Zero sugar has a rather smooth mouth feel with a pleasant lime-ish aftertaste.  You begin to notice the sucralose sweetener on the back end the more you drink, but it never becomes unpleasant.

So I guess zero sugar is a thing I do now.  I’m glad to know that there’s a healthy enough market out there to demand an assortment of quality products.  I’ll keep that in mind the next time I find myself out on the waves.
