MTN Dew VooDEW

There needs to be more Halloween themed sodas.  This isn’t a particularly controversial stance, but more voices need to speak up about this.  Soda is liquid sugar. Halloween is the sugariest holiday. Why shouldn’t they be together forever? Thankfully, Mtn Dew has done their part over the years making Pitch Black and Pitch Black 2.  The latter of which had mixed reviews. Fortunately, this year they decided puns were scary and created VooDEW.

The flavor of VooDEW is a mystery that will be revealed in due time.  Today though I will attempt to pick the lock and open the safe that holds the unknown taste.  I’ve seen a few guesses online so I’m not going into this blind persay, but I think my tongue can be unbiased in this situation.

Twist does not practice VooDEW even though he was born from it

Heads up, this is a limited edition flavor so you’ll have just over a week to find yourself a bottle at the time this review is posted.

The initial scent I get from the mouth of the bottle is that of a small green (lime) marshmallow.  I can’t imagine the flavor being that specific, so I must continue. That said, a lime green marshmallow soda would be fantastic.  Perhaps next year.

Well, I certainly think it’s fruit based.  I’m picking up on lime, orange, and a bit of pineapple in there.  Honestly it tastes like you tore open a large amount of assorted lollipops and put them all in your mouth at once.  There is still a marshmallow cream essence attached to the soda as well that adds a smoothing effect to the potentially biting mouthfeel.

Since I don’t actually know the flavor we’ll let the previous paragraph stand as is as I describe the rest of the soda.

Carbonation wise it starts off rather smooth, but quickly escalates to a bit of a burn on the back of my throat.  It’s also a very sweet soda, with this 20oz bottle housing 73 grams of sugar. The sugary mixture sticks to your teeth for a bit, but not to the point where it’s annoying.  An aftertaste is present though it mostly mirrors the actual flavor of the soda, so I’ve got no issue with that either.

I wish I’d reviewed this earlier in October as VooDEW is a good addition to the Mtn Dew line up, and I wouldn’t mind another bottle or two.  Pitch Black is the better soda, but VooDEW holds its own as a Halloween beverage. Overall it’s probably a Top 5 Dew for me so it has some merit.  Go out and stock up on it before it goes away, and pretend you’re drinking little green marshmallows.
